  • Earth-Sun Distance: Understanding Astronomical Units & Orbital Variations
The Earth is approximately 93 million miles (150 million kilometers) from the sun. This distance is also known as one astronomical unit (AU).

However, it's important to note that Earth's orbit is not perfectly circular, but slightly elliptical. So the distance between Earth and the sun varies throughout the year.

    * Perihelion: The closest point in Earth's orbit to the sun is about 91.4 million miles (147.1 million km). This occurs in early January.

    * Aphelion: The furthest point in Earth's orbit from the sun is about 94.5 million miles (152.1 million km). This occurs in early July.
