  • Apollo 10: Did John Young Perform Solo Lunar Orbits?
John Young did no lunar orbits alone on Apollo 10.

    Here's why:

    * Apollo 10 was a mission to test the lunar landing procedures. Young and his crewmate, Eugene Cernan, piloted the Lunar Module (LM) to within 9.5 miles of the lunar surface, but they did not actually land.

    * The crew always remained in the command module or lunar module together. They never separated into solo orbits.

It's easy to get confused because Apollo 10 is often referred to as the "dress rehearsal" for the moon landing, and it was a very important mission. However, no crew member on Apollo 10 performed a solo lunar orbit.
