  • Hubble Space Telescope Speed & Orbit: What You Need to Know
The Hubble Space Telescope doesn't really have a "speed" in the way we typically think of it. Here's why:

    * Orbiting Earth: Hubble orbits Earth at a speed of about 5 miles per second (8 kilometers per second). This is a constant speed, not a measure of how quickly it travels from one point to another.

    * Not a "vehicle": Hubble is a telescope, not a vehicle designed for fast travel like a rocket. Its primary function is to observe space, not to move quickly through it.

    * Relative to Earth: Its speed is relative to the Earth's surface. However, both Hubble and Earth are moving through space at a very high speed due to the Earth's revolution around the Sun and the Sun's movement within the Milky Way galaxy.

So, while Hubble has a speed relative to Earth, it's not relevant to its purpose of observing the universe.
