  • Astronomical Unit (AU): Definition and Distance Explained
    The astronomical unit (AU) is based on the average distance between the Earth and the Sun.

    More precisely, it's defined as:

    * 1 AU = 149,597,870.7 kilometers (92,955,807.3 miles)

    This definition was established in 2012 by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). Prior to that, the AU was based on observations of Earth's orbit and had some slight variations over time.
