  • Nicolaus Copernicus: The Father of the Heliocentric Model
The scientist who is most famously credited with the idea that the Sun is the center of the universe is Nicolaus Copernicus.

While Copernicus was not the first person to suggest this idea (ancient Greek philosophers like Aristarchus of Samos had similar theories), his work, "De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium" (On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres), published in 1543, was instrumental in shifting the scientific community's view of the universe.

His heliocentric model, which placed the Sun at the center with the Earth and other planets orbiting it, was a radical departure from the prevailing geocentric model of the time. It was met with significant resistance, but it eventually paved the way for the development of modern astronomy.
