While he's often referred to as a god, he is actually classified as a Titan in Greek mythology. The Titans were the children of Gaia (Earth) and Uranus (Sky), and they ruled the world before the Olympians.

Helios was the son of the Titans Hyperion and Thea. He was responsible for driving the chariot of the sun across the sky each day.
