  • Planets in Our Solar System: A Comprehensive Guide
    There are eight objects currently considered planets in our solar system:

    * Mercury

    * Venus

    * Earth

    * Mars

    * Jupiter

    * Saturn

    * Uranus

    * Neptune

    There are also many dwarf planets, including Pluto, Eris, Makemake, and Haumea.

    The definition of a planet changed in 2006, so objects like Pluto are no longer considered planets because they don't meet all the criteria.

    The International Astronomical Union (IAU) defined a planet as an object that:

    1. Orbits the Sun.

    2. Has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape.

    3. Has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit.

    Pluto does not meet the third criteria, as it shares its orbit with other objects in the Kuiper belt.
