  • Sputnik 1: The Dawn of the Space Age - Who Built the First Satellite?
The first artificial satellite to orbit the Earth was Sputnik 1, launched by the Soviet Union on October 4, 1957.

While it was a Soviet accomplishment, it's important to note that the development of Sputnik 1 was led by a team of engineers and scientists under the supervision of Sergei Korolev, who is often considered the "father of Soviet rocketry".
