  • Understanding Shadows at Sunset: Length, Direction, and Sharpness
As the sun lowers in the sky, our shadows do a few interesting things:

    * Get Longer: The sun's angle changes, causing the light to hit us at a shallower angle. This makes our shadows stretch out, becoming much longer.

    * Change Direction: The shadow will point in the opposite direction of the sun. As the sun moves lower, the shadow will gradually shift direction, becoming longer and moving closer to the direction of the sunset.

    * Become Less Sharp: The lower sun creates a softer, diffused light. This makes the edges of our shadows less defined and more blurry.

Think of it this way: the lower the sun is in the sky, the more "stretched out" the shadow becomes. This is why shadows are much longer at sunrise and sunset than they are at midday.
