  • Johannes Kepler: Discoverer of Elliptical Planetary Orbits
The person who first showed that planetary orbits are ellipses was Johannes Kepler.

He formulated his three laws of planetary motion, which were based on the meticulous observations of Tycho Brahe.

Kepler's first law states that planets orbit the Sun in elliptical paths, with the Sun at one focus of the ellipse. This was a groundbreaking discovery, as it overturned the long-held belief that planets moved in perfect circles.
