  • Sun's Apparent Speed: Debunking the 600 mph Myth
The apparent speed of the Sun across the sky is not 600 mph. That's a common misconception. Here's why:

    * Earth's Rotation: The Sun appears to move across the sky because the Earth is rotating on its axis. This rotation takes about 24 hours to complete.

    * Angular Speed vs. Linear Speed: The 600 mph figure often quoted refers to the *angular speed* of the Sun, meaning how fast it appears to move across the sky. However, this doesn't take into account the vast distance to the Sun.

    * Actual Speed: The Earth is actually orbiting the Sun at a much faster speed, approximately 67,000 miles per hour.

So, while the Sun appears to move across the sky at a rate of about 15 degrees per hour, it's actually our planet's rotation that creates this illusion.
