  • Lunar Prospector: Discoveries at the Moon's Poles in 1998
In 1998, the Lunar Prospector mission discovered evidence of water ice at the lunar poles.

    Here's what it found:

    * Neutron spectrometer: This instrument detected an unusually high concentration of hydrogen at the lunar poles, strongly suggesting the presence of water ice.

    * Polar craters: The mission observed that craters near the poles were permanently shadowed, creating extremely cold environments that could preserve water ice.

This discovery was significant because it indicated the potential for water resources on the Moon, which could be valuable for future lunar exploration and possibly even for establishing a lunar base.
