  • Moonlight: Where Does It Come From? - A Simple Explanation
The light from the Moon doesn't come from the Moon itself! It's actually reflected sunlight. Here's why:

    * The Moon doesn't produce its own light: Unlike the Sun, the Moon is a large, rocky body with no internal light source.

    * Sunlight is reflected: When sunlight shines on the Moon's surface, some of it is absorbed, and some of it is reflected back into space. This reflected sunlight is what we see as moonlight.

    * Phases of the Moon: The different phases of the Moon (New Moon, Waxing Crescent, Full Moon, etc.) are caused by the changing angles at which we see the sunlit portion of the Moon from Earth.

So, the next time you look at the Moon, remember that you're actually seeing sunlight bouncing off its surface!
