  • Absolute Magnitude: Understanding Stellar Brightness & Distance
    The term that takes into consideration the brightness of a star but ignores differences that distance can make is absolute magnitude.

    Here's why:

    * Absolute magnitude is a measure of a star's intrinsic brightness. It represents how bright a star would appear if it were located at a standard distance of 10 parsecs (about 32.6 light-years) from Earth. This means it eliminates the effect of distance on apparent brightness.

    * Apparent magnitude, on the other hand, is the brightness of a star as seen from Earth. It is affected by both the star's intrinsic brightness and its distance from Earth.

    So, absolute magnitude provides a more accurate comparison of the true brightness of stars, regardless of their location in space.
