  • Jupiter's History: Who Observed the Planet First & Its Naming
Jupiter has been known since ancient times. It's not a matter of discovery, but rather recognition and naming.

While we don't know exactly who first observed Jupiter, it was likely ancient Babylonian astronomers who were among the first to record its movement across the sky. The planet's brightness and prominence made it easily visible to the naked eye, even in ancient times.

The Romans named the planet after their chief god, Jupiter, the equivalent of the Greek god Zeus. The name stuck and is still used today.
