The celestial equator is the projection of Earth's equator onto the celestial sphere. It is an imaginary circle that runs directly above Earth's equator and is perpendicular to the celestial poles (the points where the Earth's axis of rotation intersects the celestial sphere).
Everything north of the celestial equator is in the northern celestial hemisphere, while everything south of it is in the southern celestial hemisphere.
