The first space probe to fly past the Moon was Luna 1, launched by the Soviet Union on January 2, 1959.

While it wasn't intended to fly past the Moon, it missed its target due to a miscalculation, becoming the first human-made object to enter heliocentric orbit (orbiting the Sun).
