  • Fixed Stars: Proxima Centauri vs. Polaris - Understanding Stellar Motion
Neither Proxima Centauri nor the Pole Star are fixed stars. Here's why:

    * Proxima Centauri: This is the closest star to our Sun, but it's still a star that is moving through space. All stars move, although some move very slowly.

    * Pole Star: The current Pole Star is Polaris, but it won't always be. Earth's axis slowly wobbles over thousands of years, changing the star that appears closest to the North Pole. This "wobble" is called precession.

    Fixed Stars:

The term "fixed star" is a bit of a misnomer. It's an outdated term used to describe stars that appear very distant and seemingly unchanging in position relative to each other. However, all stars are moving through space, just like our Sun.
