* Apparent Motion: From our perspective on Earth, the Sun and stars appear to move across the sky. The Sun rises in the east and sets in the west, while the stars seem to rotate around a fixed point (the North Star). It naturally seemed like Earth was stationary and everything else was moving around us.
* Lack of Technology: Ancient astronomers lacked the tools to observe the universe with sufficient precision to challenge this idea. Telescopes and other advanced instruments didn't exist, making it difficult to observe subtle movements of planets and stars.
* Religious Beliefs: In many cultures, geocentrism was reinforced by religious beliefs that placed humanity and Earth at the center of creation.
However, over time, observations and scientific advancements began to challenge this view. The heliocentric model, proposed by Copernicus and later championed by Galileo, gained acceptance. This model placed the Sun at the center of the solar system with Earth and other planets orbiting around it.
Key discoveries that led to the shift:
* Phases of Venus: Galileo's observations of the phases of Venus were crucial evidence for heliocentrism. The different phases could only be explained if Venus was orbiting the Sun.
* Parallax: The lack of observable parallax (the apparent shift in the position of an object when viewed from different locations) for stars also supported a heliocentric model. If Earth was moving around the Sun, the stars should appear to shift slightly.
