The first probe mission to the moon was Luna 1, launched by the Soviet Union on January 2, 1959.

While it didn't land on the Moon, it successfully achieved the following:

* First man-made object to escape Earth's gravity.

* First spacecraft to pass near the Moon.

* First successful lunar flyby mission.

It provided valuable information about the Moon's magnetic field and radiation environment.
