  • How Far Back in Time Are We Looking When Observing Distant Stars?
If you look at a star that is 14 light-years away, the light you are seeing left the star 14 years ago.

    Here's why:

    * Light-year: A light-year is the distance light travels in one year.

    * Speed of Light: Light travels at a constant speed of approximately 299,792 kilometers per second (186,282 miles per second).

Since the light from that star has been traveling for 14 years to reach your eyes, you are seeing the star as it appeared 14 years in the past.
