  • History of Planetary Exploration: First Images from Spacecraft
The first spacecraft to send back data and images from another planet was Mariner 4, which flew by Mars in July 1965.

While it didn't capture any spectacular images, it did transmit 22 close-up pictures of the Martian surface, revealing a cratered, barren landscape. This was a groundbreaking moment, as it was the first time we had a close-up view of another planet.
