  • Johannes Kepler: Discoverer of Elliptical Planetary Orbits
The first person to propose elliptical orbits of planets was Johannes Kepler.

While it was Nicolaus Copernicus who first proposed the heliocentric model (that the planets revolve around the Sun), he still believed the orbits were circular. Kepler, through meticulous analysis of observational data collected by Tycho Brahe, realized that the planets actually followed elliptical paths. This is famously known as Kepler's First Law of Planetary Motion.
