  • Moon vs. Sun: Why Does the Moon Appear Larger in the Sky?
This is a common misconception! The sun is actually much, much larger than the moon.

    Here's why it appears bigger:

    * Distance: The moon is much closer to Earth than the sun. The sun is about 93 million miles away, while the moon is only about 238,900 miles away.

    * Perspective: The difference in distance creates a visual illusion. Because the moon is closer, it appears larger in our sky, even though it's significantly smaller in actual size.

Here's a helpful analogy: Imagine two objects – a small coin held close to your eye and a large billboard far away. Even though the billboard is much bigger, the coin appears larger because it's closer to you.

Fun Fact: The sun's diameter is about 109 times the diameter of the Earth! The moon, on the other hand, is about 1/4 the diameter of the Earth.
