  • Why Does the New Moon Appear Light? Understanding Earthshine
The new moon surface isn't shown light directly by the Sun. Here's why:

    * The New Moon's Position: During a new moon phase, the moon is positioned between the Earth and the Sun. This means the side of the moon facing Earth is the side not illuminated by the sun.

    * Earthshine: While the new moon itself is dark, you might sometimes see a faint glow on it. This is called earthshine, which is sunlight reflected off the Earth and back onto the moon. This effect is strongest when the moon is very close to the new moon phase.

In short: The new moon is not illuminated directly by the Sun, and we can only see it faintly due to reflected light from the Earth.
