  • Planets in the Universe: What We Know (and Don't Know)
We don't know the exact number of planets in the universe! Here's why:

    * The universe is incredibly vast: We can only observe a tiny portion of it.

    * Planet detection is challenging: We use indirect methods like detecting the wobble of a star caused by a planet's gravity.

    * Planet sizes vary: Some planets are much smaller and harder to detect than others.

    What we DO know:

    * Billions of planets: Scientists estimate there are billions of planets in our Milky Way galaxy alone, and billions of galaxies in the observable universe.

    * Exoplanets are common: We've confirmed the existence of thousands of planets outside our solar system, and that number is growing rapidly.

So, while we don't have a definite answer, it's safe to say there are likely an unimaginable number of planets out there!
