While the Little Dipper is a distinct constellation in its own right, the Big Dipper is a recognizable asterism (a pattern of stars) within the constellation Ursa Major. The Big Dipper's four stars that make up the bowl are similar in shape and orientation to the Little Dipper, leading to the confusion.
However, the Little Dipper is much smaller and fainter than the Big Dipper, and its stars form a more distinct dipper shape. The Little Dipper's "handle" also points towards Polaris, the North Star, while the Big Dipper's handle points in a different direction.
