It sounds like you're talking about the two stars that point to Polaris, the North Star. These are the two stars at the end of the Big Dipper's bowl:

* Dubhe: The upper star.

* Merak: The lower star.

If you draw an imaginary line through these two stars, it will point you directly to Polaris, which is very close to true north. This is why the Big Dipper is so helpful for navigation, especially in the Northern Hemisphere.
