Here's why:
* The Moon's Phases: The phases of the moon we see are caused by the changing position of the sun, moon, and Earth. As the moon orbits Earth, the amount of the sunlit side of the moon that is facing us changes.
* New Moon: During the New Moon phase, the moon is positioned between the Earth and the sun. This means the sunlit side of the moon faces away from us, leaving the side facing Earth in darkness.
While we can't see the moon itself during the New Moon, it's still there! It's just that we're looking at the unlit side.
