  • NASA Moon Missions: Understanding Lunar Impacts and Apollo Goals
NASA didn't "shoot at" the moon in the way you might be thinking. It's a common misconception based on the idea that the Apollo missions were about "conquering" the moon.

    Here's what actually happened:

    * Apollo Missions: The Apollo missions were about landing humans on the moon and conducting scientific research. The rockets that carried the astronauts to the moon were designed to safely land them and bring them back to Earth.

    * Lunar Impacts: NASA has conducted missions that intentionally impacted the moon's surface for scientific purposes. These missions used impactors, essentially probes designed to crash into the moon. The purpose of these missions was:

    * Studying the Moon's interior: Analyzing seismic waves generated by the impact helped scientists learn about the moon's internal structure.

    * Creating craters for study: The craters produced by these impacts provided a fresh, unweathered surface for analysis by lunar orbiters.

So, while NASA has impacted the moon with probes, it has never "shot at" it with the intent of destruction or harm. The missions were all about expanding our knowledge and understanding of the lunar environment.
