Each star stands for one state, and they are arranged in a rectangle of six rows, with eight stars in each row, except for the top row which has six stars.
The stars were first added to the flag in 1776 when the original 13 colonies declared independence from Great Britain. The number of stars has been updated to reflect the addition of new states throughout US history.
