  • Absolute Magnitude: Understanding Star Brightness
The real brightness of stars is called absolute magnitude.

    Here's why:

    * Apparent magnitude is how bright a star appears to us on Earth. This is affected by the star's distance from us.

    * Absolute magnitude is a standardized measure of a star's intrinsic brightness, as if it were viewed from a distance of 10 parsecs (32.6 light-years). This gives us a true comparison of how luminous different stars really are.
