  • North Star Visibility: Latitude and the Horizon
The North Star (Polaris) appears closest to the horizon when you are at the equator.

    Here's why:

    * The North Star is aligned with Earth's axis of rotation. This means it appears directly overhead at the North Pole.

    * As you move away from the North Pole towards the equator, the angle between the North Star and the horizon decreases. At the equator, the North Star is on the horizon.

    * The latitude of a location determines how high the North Star appears in the sky. The higher the latitude, the higher the North Star appears.

Therefore, the closer you are to the equator, the closer the North Star will be to the horizon.
