Here's why:
* Earth's Tilt: The Earth is tilted on its axis, and this tilt is the main reason for the seasons. During winter in the Northern Hemisphere, the North Pole is tilted away from the sun. This means that the Northern Hemisphere receives less direct sunlight, leading to shorter days and longer nights.
* Sunrise and Sunset: The apparent sunrise and sunset times are determined by the angle of the sun in the sky. When the sun is lower in the sky (as it is during winter), its rays have to travel through more atmosphere before reaching our eyes, making the sun appear to rise later and set earlier.
Important Note: This is true for the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, the seasons are reversed, so the sun appears to rise latest and set earliest during their winter.
