The first object to land on the surface of Mars was Mars 3, a Soviet spacecraft. It landed on December 2, 1971, but communication with it was lost only 20 seconds after landing.

While it wasn't the first successful landing, Mars 3 holds the title for the first object to actually touch down on the surface of Mars.
