The first object to reach the moon was the Soviet spacecraft Luna 2, which impacted the lunar surface on September 14, 1959.

While this was a significant achievement, it's important to note that Luna 2 was designed to crash into the moon. It didn't orbit or land softly. The first spacecraft to successfully orbit the moon was also Soviet, Luna 3, launched just a few months later.
