The first planet to be explored by a space probe was Venus, by the Soviet probe Venera 1 in 1961. However, Venera 1 lost contact with Earth shortly after launch, and its data was not obtained.

While Venera 1 was the first probe to target Venus, the first probe to successfully fly by and send back data was Mariner 2 in 1962.
