  • Lunar Orbiter 1: The First Probe to Map the Moon's Surface
The first probe to extensively map the surface of the Moon was Lunar Orbiter 1, launched by NASA in 1966.

While earlier missions, like Ranger 7, provided close-up images, Lunar Orbiter 1 was designed specifically for mapping. It took over 200 high-resolution pictures of the Moon's surface, covering over 99% of it. This data was crucial for selecting landing sites for the Apollo missions.
