  • Sun's Diameter: Understanding the Size of Our Star
    It's not possible to talk about the "miles around" the sun in the same way we would talk about the circumference of a planet or a ball. Here's why:

    * The sun is a ball of gas: It doesn't have a solid surface like Earth, so there's no clear boundary to measure.

    * The sun is constantly changing: It swells and contracts, and its outer atmosphere (the corona) extends far out into space.

    Instead of miles around, we talk about the sun's diameter, which is the distance across its center. The sun's diameter is about 865,000 miles (1.39 million kilometers).
