It was a Soviet probe that crash-landed on the moon on September 13, 1959. While it wasn't a soft landing, it marked the first time any human-made object had reached the lunar surface.

However, the first spacecraft to soft land on the moon was Luna 9, also from the Soviet Union, which landed on February 3, 1966.
