  • Apollo 11 Spacecraft: Where Are the Command, Service & Lunar Modules Now?
The Apollo 11 spacecraft did not disappear or vanish. It's actually made up of three parts:

    * Command Module (Columbia): This is the part that brought the astronauts back to Earth. It's currently on display at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.

    * Service Module: This module provided power, oxygen, water, and other essential systems for the mission. It was jettisoned before re-entry into the atmosphere.

    * Lunar Module (Eagle): This module landed on the moon and carried the astronauts to the surface. The ascent stage of the Lunar Module was jettisoned after launch from the moon, and the descent stage remains on the lunar surface.

    So, to summarize:

    * Columbia (Command Module): On display in a museum

    * Service Module: Discarded in space

    * Eagle (Lunar Module): Descent stage on the moon, ascent stage discarded in space

Therefore, the Apollo 11 spacecraft is not "lost" or "missing," but its different components have different fates.
