Here's why:
* Stars form independently: Stars form from massive clouds of gas and dust.
* Planets form around stars: Planets form from the leftover material after a star is born, orbiting the star.
* Many stars have multiple planets: We've discovered many star systems with multiple planets orbiting a single star.
Therefore, for every single star, there are likely to be several planets orbiting it. Even though we've discovered thousands of exoplanets, the vast majority of stars in the universe have not yet been confirmed to have planets.
So, the number of stars is far greater than the number of planets, even if the number of planets is still incredibly large.
