  • Big Dipper Visibility: Latitudes & Circumpolar Status
The Big Dipper is circumpolar for locations at latitudes above 41 degrees north.

This means that from any location north of 41 degrees north latitude, the Big Dipper never sets below the horizon and is always visible in the sky.

    Here's why:

    * Circumpolar stars: These are stars that never set below the horizon as seen from a particular location.

    * Latitude: Latitude determines how high in the sky a star appears. The closer you are to the North Pole (higher latitude), the higher a star's position in the sky.

Since the Big Dipper is relatively close to the North Celestial Pole, it becomes circumpolar at higher latitudes.
