  • Mars Landings: A History of Spacecraft Missions
No spaceship from Earth has ever landed on Mars.

While many spacecraft have orbited Mars, the first successful landing on Mars was achieved by the Soviet Union's Mars 3 probe in 1971. However, the probe only managed to transmit data for about 20 seconds before contact was lost.

The first successful and long-lasting landing on Mars was achieved by NASA's Viking 1 lander in 1976.
