  • Understanding Lunar Waning: What Happens When the Moon Shrinks
When the Moon's illumination is decreasing with each passing day, it is said to be waning.

    Here's why:

    * Waxing: Means the illuminated portion of the Moon is increasing.

    * Waning: Means the illuminated portion of the Moon is decreasing.

So, after a full moon, as the illuminated portion shrinks, we say the Moon is waning.
