  • Johannes Kepler: Discoverer of Elliptical Planetary Orbits | Astronomy Explained
The true shape of planetary orbits was discovered by Johannes Kepler.

While Nicolaus Copernicus had proposed a heliocentric model of the solar system (sun-centered), he still believed that the planets moved in perfect circles. Kepler, through his meticulous analysis of Tycho Brahe's astronomical observations, discovered that the planets actually move in ellipses, with the sun at one focus of the ellipse. This is known as Kepler's First Law of Planetary Motion.
