  • Does the Sun Orbit? Understanding Solar Motion in the Milky Way
The sun does orbit in space! It's not just floating around on its own. Here's why:

    * The Sun is part of the Milky Way galaxy: The sun, along with billions of other stars, is part of a giant spiral galaxy called the Milky Way. It orbits around the center of this galaxy.

    * Gravity: The Milky Way's center contains a supermassive black hole. The black hole's powerful gravitational pull attracts the Sun and other stars, causing them to orbit around it. This orbit takes approximately 225 to 250 million years to complete.

    * Stars aren't stationary: It's easy to think of the stars as fixed points in the sky, but they're constantly moving. The Sun's orbit is just one example of the dynamic movement happening within a galaxy.

So, while the Sun appears to be stationary from our perspective on Earth, it's actually in constant motion, orbiting the center of our galaxy.
