  • Viking 1: The Historic 1976 Mars Explorer
The unmanned spacecraft that took pictures of Mars in 1976 was Viking 1.

Viking 1 was launched in 1975 and landed on Mars in 1976. It was one of two Viking missions (the other being Viking 2) that sent back the first detailed images of the Martian surface.

These images revealed a barren, rocky landscape with evidence of ancient water erosion. They also provided valuable scientific data about Mars' atmosphere and geology.
