However, they appear to be roughly the same size in our sky due to a remarkable coincidence:
* The sun is much farther away from Earth than the moon. This distance difference makes the sun appear smaller in the sky, almost perfectly matching the moon's apparent size.
This is why we can see total solar eclipses, where the moon completely blocks out the sun.
