The first US astronaut to travel beyond Earth's atmosphere was Alan Shepard on May 5, 1961, during the Mercury-Redstone 3 mission, also known as Freedom 7.
While his flight was suborbital, meaning he didn't complete a full orbit around Earth, it did take him above the internationally recognized Kármán line, which marks the beginning of space at 100 kilometers (62 miles) above sea level.
